Learn how to apply a complete front leg bandage, including safe toe protection, layered wrapping techniques, and proper tension control. This session guides you through each step to ensure secure, comfortable support for the entire limb.

Session summary

  • Prevent pressure sores: place small cotton pieces between all digits — including the higher first digit — to avoid compression injuries when the bandage is applied.

  • Apply the soft padding correctly: wrap the paw from dorsal to palmar surfaces, continue distally and proximally, and maintain moderate, even tension throughout.

  • Bandage the entire limb: extend the wrap fully up the limb, ensuring coverage reaches above the elbow when a full leg bandage is required.

  • Add the conforming elastic layer: repeat the same wrapping pattern, shifting direction medially or laterally as needed, while keeping all elastic layers strictly within the borders of the soft padding.

  • Finish with cohesive elastic wrap: apply the wet-wrap layer using the same technique, stabilising the bandage while maintaining comfort and preventing slip.

  • Monitor distal circulation: understand when to leave digits III and IV exposed to allow inspection for swelling or compromised blood flow.

  • Adapt for clinical purpose: recognise how to modify the bandage depending on the underlying condition or injury.

Instructor’s comment

Every limb bandage starts at the toes — protect them well, and the rest of the wrap will follow smoothly.
